As much as I love this movie, I don’t recommend it for kids. The Revenant is rated R for strong frontier combat and violence including gory images, a sexual assault, language and brief nudity. The physical and emotional hardships Glass faced after he watched the murders of his loved ones and was abandoned by those he trusted took a perceivable toll on his psychological wellbeing, and it was fascinating to watch his development as he sought out his revenge and eventually stated, “ I ain’t afraid to die anymore. I’m a sucker for a movie with psychological depth, and this film did not disappoint. The setting is gorgeous, the acting is flawless, and the shots themselves are artfully done. settlers and conquering nature, I was drawn into the movie instantly. I’m normally not drawn to Western films, but I think because The Revenant strayed from the traditional “cowboys and Indians” vibe while still maintaining similar concepts of natives vs. Though it was significantly better on the big screen, it was no less an incredible piece of art. There are a lot of drawn out establishing shots that are backed by beautiful atmospheric music, and the movie wouldn’t be the same without it. The score in The Revenant does a phenomenal job of truly bringing to life the natural elements in the movie. If you have the opportunity to watch this film, I advise you to sit in a dark room and allow yourself to be completely immersed in the stunning cinematography of The Revenant. Inarritu claimed that the production crew could have used green screens, but the film wouldn’t have been nearly of the same quality that it was. This film was shot primarily in Canada during limited hours of daylight– the lighting was completely natural except in one particular campfire scene. Naturally, DiCaprio admitted that he would “ never, never do that again.”īefore I go any further, I have to stop for a moment and tell you about the cinematography of this movie. In a scene where Glass and a native are sharing fresh meat from a bison, DiCaprio reported first using fake slabs of bison liver that resembled “ red gelatinous pancakes.” Wanting to take his performance over the top, he insisted that he ate real raw bison liver, despite being a vegetarian. Her lines are in a native language, but they effectively add to the surreality of Glass’ near-death experiences.ĭiCaprio took his dedication to a new level with his role in The Revenant. ![]() Though there isn’t much dialogue through a large portion of the 156 minute film, while fighting to survive, Glass occasionally hears the voice of his wife. The Revenant isn’t DiCaprio and Hardy’s first film together, however, as the two spent time together on set for the film Inception (2010). ![]() The hatred between Glass and one of the men in his crew, Fitzgerald ( Tom Hardy), was almost tangible. DiCaprio often plays serious roles, but his performance in The Revenant is darker and relies more heavily on nonverbal acting skills. The chemistry between characters was far beyond merely believable. Based on a true story, The Revenant follows Glass after he is mauled by a grizzly bear and later left for dead by his fellow crew members, only to trek through the wintery taiga with nothing but his wits and a giant bear pelt. Inarritu, The Revenant tells the story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman involved in the fur trade industry in the 1820s. Anybody who can drool on command like that deserves an Oscar.ĭirected by Alejandro G.
